Stay Connected Last night I had the honor of introducing Barbara Marx Hubbard to a packed theater in Boulder, Colorado. After screening Our Story, the first DVD in her Humanity Ascending documentary series, a man in obvious turmoil stood and with tears in his eyes asked, “But what can we DO about all the despair in the world?” Barbara answered him with great compassion. She shared a story about how “imaginal” cells in a cocooning caterpillar hold the vision of the future butterfly. Despite the fact that these cells are first perceived as foreign invaders and are destroyed by the creature’s own immune system, the imaginal cells continue to multiply and connect with a strength and force that ultimately and miraculously transforms the caterpillar. Barbara suggested that we take notice of this God-given, evolutionary design and hold the vision of being imaginal cells in a new, emerging body of humanity. By staying connected and strong in our intention, we can co-create a future that applies our great human potential to the betterment of humanity and the world. The next day, I received an email of gratitude from the man who had asked Barbara that question. He wrote, “I have been struggling for a long, long time on what is it all about? Why is it that I feel there is no end to all the turmoil? Why is it that I continue to struggle with thinking there is no solution, that mankind and the planet as a whole are doomed to go the way of the dinosaur because we as human beings are out of control and because of our actions are destroying planet earth and its people? “But last night I left feeling that maybe there is hope! Maybe by ‘connecting’ with each other no matter what our status, no matter our color or ethnicity, where we are politically etc., etc., we can begin talking to each other and maybe just a little at a time, one person at a time, we can save planet earth and its people.” I, for one, am going to keep on doing just that. The transformational power of nature gives us hope for the future of humanity. All my work--with clients, staff and horses--is based on making agreements for working together. One of my women’s programs is a one-year commitment to multiple transformational retreats held at various locations across the country. This is a deep discovery process that provides an opportunity for learning and positive transformation that can occur when working through personal challenges. I use two sets of agreements for these retreats: one for staff (coaches, facilitators and administration) and one for my clients to use as a working model to help develop their own agreements. Our agreements have made working together so much easier, with less struggle and difficulty among staff or with clients. In fact, using the Agreements recently saved us from losing a retreat participant. One of our participants was experiencing a personal challenge with a particular facilitator. She was very frustrated and came to me to voice her complaint. I listened deeply and compassionately, allowing her to “vent” and dispel the heat from her argument. I drew her attention to the agreements she willingly signed at the beginning of the retreat. Eventually, she was ready to participate again and practice resolving her conflict directly (with the facilitator) by speaking her truth compassionately. The facilitator drew upon the agreements about listening deeply and honoring differences. As a result, there was no collusiveness or divisiveness, everything lightened up and our participant remained to finish the retreat. It was quite an empowering learning for all involved. A third set of Agreements is emerging in my work—for my equine co-creators. I base my personal transformation retreats on the wisdom of the horse. Since childhood my equine friends have taught me that they are not just pets but valuable contributors to my learning. I consider them co-creators of the therapeutic work I do with clients. You cannot fool a horse; they sense and reflect back to you your emotional state and intention like a barometer. I have found that when I use the agreements with integrity, verbal or non-spoken, the horses respond immediately. My mission is to co-create personal transformational experiences that also honor the horse, bringing better understanding of its spiritual vibration, sensitive communications and loving contributions to human learning. I feel blessed, as the Revolutionary Agreements say, “to live my mission.” Our Science of Mind Reverend gave six presentations informing us about the Agreements. Even after being a facilitator of Stephen Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” for nine years, working with the Agreements affected my life profoundly. Since reading your work, I’ve created a set of Life Intentions that are incredibly inspiring. This time of year, the Aspen’s transformation is easily seen through golden autumn leaves shimmering in the sunlight. Less easy to see, but equally true for me, is the miracle that I, at 60, am a cell in the emerging body of humanity. This grandmother likes that a lot!
