Modeling Agreements Locally and Globally

Bob: In the 70s we co-created a small, high quality community of likeminded families within our church.  We were looking for a more committed faith, a way to share our resources and the rich experience of extended families in which to raise our children.  The community functioned quite well for some time but eventually dissipated as people moved on.  A core of us have remained connected and involved in each others’ lives even though we now live in different geographical locations.  Although we meet only three weekends a year, we remain spiritually connected, sharing our thoughts and dreams, our challenges and joys.  In the beginning we created a set of agreements within which we all lived and worked with each other.  Marian’s Revolutionary Agreements introduced us to new and powerful tools with which to work.
 
Peggy: We love the down-to-earth stories Marian provides and the practical ways to apply the Agreements to everyday living.  They are like code words or emotional and verbal shortcuts, supporting Bob and me to get to our “truths” much more quickly. They definitely keep us honest, providing a great touchstone for doing a quick self- check on everyday decision-making.
 
Bob: Right.  As Peggy and I dance the roles of relationship, sometimes we share the lead and other times we hang on to each other and skip side-by-side. The Agreements have helped our dance to become even more fluid. We introduced the posters and book to our core group and when we shared our experiences with Marian she provided wonderful affirmation for how we live our lives with intention.
            We recognized the simplicity and yet profound nature of these timeless tools as marvelous anchors in a world wrought by separateness and challenges and we set our sights higher and outward to reach a broader community. If we can use the Agreements with success in our personal community of family, core friends and coaching clients, why not go global? The idea of a “world family” is intriguing.  So now we dedicate an article in each of our monthly Birch Corner newsletters to one agreement and send it out to spread like Marian’s idea of wildflowers, seeding the planet with positive ideas for change.
 
Peggy: We have given ourselves a framework of one year to work with the Agreements, one per month, which fosters our focus on that particular agreement with a heightened awareness before the newsletter comes out.  Readers respond to our articles, often sharing them with others, thus answering my oft-wondered question, “Am I making a difference out there?”

I recently finished Revolutionary Agreements and IT IS WONDERFUL! It is so easy to read, especially for those, like me, for whom English is a second language. Because you write of your many personal experiences, the book reads more like a diary and that makes it even more real, like everyday life. Meeting you, then reading the book, and now rereading it, I feel the Agreements are becoming part of my life. I keep the bookmark with me as a daily reminder. I also appreciate how accessible you have been when I had comments or questions. Thank you.

The gentle notes warmed my heart

Like spring the words are bursting forth
With Truth, Acceptance and Gratitude.
